The Journal of Physical Activity and Health (JPAH) is proud to announce Loretta DiPietro as its new Editor-in-Chief, effective January 1, 2012. Prior to accepting this position, DiPietro served on the JPAH Editorial Board.
Outgoing Editors-in-Chief Harold W. Kohl, III and Jennifer M. Hootman served in their role from 2007 through 2011. Kohl will stay on as co-Editor for a six-month transitional period. Under the guidance of Hootman and Kohl, the journal grew from a quarterly to an eight-time-per-year publication and witnessed a growth in published manuscripts of more than 150% per year from 2007 to 2011. JPAH also became a leading international journal, with submissions coming from 32 countries in the year 2011 and an initial Impact Factor rating of 1.857.
In taking over for Kohl and Hootman, DiPietro brings a considerable amount of experience in and respect from the fields of physical activity and health. DiPietro received her BS and MS degrees in Health Education from Southern Connecticut State University and her MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Yale University. As one of the first graduate students trained in Exercise Epidemiology, she then completed post-doctoral training at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and, as an Epidemiologic Intelligence Officer, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. DiPietro’s research interests concern the role of physical activity and successful aging. She has been awarded several grants from the National Institute on Aging and her current work strives to bridge the gaps between population-based public health and the clinical and physiological domains of exercise science. DiPietro served on the faculty at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and the Yale University School of Medicine for 15 years prior to arriving at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in 2008. Currently, she is the chair of the Department of Exercise Science, which is one of very few such departments in the world that is housed and completely integrated within a school of public health.
