The International Journal of Sport Communication (IJSC) provides a platform for the dissemination of peer-reviewed research and information on the unique aspects and divergent activities associated with sport communication. Although many journals cover a single aspect of sport and communication, IJSC is the first to provide an all-encompassing view of the field by covering any topic related to communication in sport, through sport, or in a sport setting. This rigorously reviewed quarterly journal features quantitative and qualitative articles, including cutting-edge research, case studies, and editorials.
Cross-Disciplinary Appeal: IJSC welcomes innovative and original research submissions by academics, practitioners, and research students on any analysis related to sport communication. The members of the editorial board (and prospective authors) are sport communication scholars from diverse fields such as critical studies, sport management, advertising, communication policy, history, media studies, psychology, telecommunications, cultural studies, sport marketing, international communication, gender studies, journalism, public relations, communication theory, and new media.
IJSC is published quarterly, in March, June, September, and December.
The mission of the International Journal of Sport Communication (IJSC) is to provide a platform for academics and practitioners to disseminate peer-reviewed research and information on the unique aspects and divergent activities associated with any communication in sport, through sport, or in a sport setting.

Prior to submission, please carefully read and follow the submission guidelines detailed below. Authors must submit their manuscripts through the journal’s ScholarOne online submission system. To submit, click the button below:
The Journals Division at Human Kinetics adheres to the criteria for authorship as outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors*:
Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to:
a. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
b. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
c. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
d. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
Conditions a, b, c, and d must all be met. Individuals who do not meet the above criteria may be listed in the acknowledgments section of the manuscript. *http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html
Authors who use artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies (such as Large Language Models [LLMs], chatbots, or image creators) in their work must indicate how they were used in the cover letter and the work itself. These technologies cannot be listed as authors as they are unable to meet all the conditions above, particularly agreeing to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
Human Kinetics is pleased to allow our authors the option of having their articles published Free or Open Access. In order for an article to be published Free or Open Access, authors must complete and return the Request for Open Access form and provide payment for this option. To learn more and request Free and Open Access, please see our Open Access resource page.
All Human Kinetics journals require that authors follow our manuscript guidelines in regards to use of copyrighted material, human and animal rights, and conflicts of interest as specified on our author resource page.
The International Journal of Sport Communication (IJSC) encourages the submission of manuscripts that increase the understanding and advancement of the field of sport communication. All submissions are welcome, as the quarterly is an international peer-reviewed journal that has an interdisciplinary appeal to researchers and practitioners in the field. Examples of acceptable topics for consideration range from sport public relations, all-sports cable channels, sport journalism, and interpersonal communication in sport to sport broadcasting, organizational communication in sport, sport Web logs, and sports radio. Other possible foci of submissions include sociocultural issues in the sport media; international sport communication; sport-media management and production; diffusion of sport-media discourses; historical and political aspects of sport communication; content analyses of sport programming and media messages; strategic management in sport communication, economic, and financial aspects affiliated with the sport media; sport film and photography; media sport consumption and negotiation; human resources development in sport communication; emerging technologies in sport media; management of sport-media organizations; sport media and the law; and sport communication personnel. Studies using quantitative or qualitative approaches are welcome.
IJSC is principally committed to the publication of theoretical and applied sport communication research from any tradition of scholarship. In addition to research and scholarly articles, IJSC publishes case studies, editorials that focus on significant issues pertaining to sport communication, reviews of books and media (i.e., Web sites, movies) that concern themselves with sport communication studies or practices, and journal article and dissertation abstracts related to sport communication topics.
When preparing manuscripts for submission to IJSC, authors should follow the guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.), 2020. Manuscripts must be submitted in English. All manuscripts must be preceded by an abstract of no more than 150 words. If footnotes are used, they should be as few as possible and should not exceed six lines each. Reference citations in the text must be accurate concerning dates of publication and spelling of author names, and they must cross-check with those in the reference list. Manuscripts may be summarily rejected if they do not follow the APA guidelines.
Please note that a double-anonymous review process is used to evaluate manuscripts. As such, any clues to the identity of the author(s) should be eliminated from the manuscript. The first page of the manuscript must not include author names or affiliations, but it should include the title of the paper and the date of submission. Authors should submit separate files for the following: title page (with all author names and affiliations), manuscript (including the title but no indication of author identities), and any tables and figures. The manuscript’s title should be no more than 20 words, and the manuscript’s running head should be no more than 30 characters. The author(s) should include at least five keywords at the bottom of the abstract page.
Resolution of digital images should be 300 dpi at full size for photos and 600 dpi for line art. Figures or photos should be submitted as .jpg or .tif files. Although our online articles support color figures, bear in mind that the journal prints in black and white, and most color files will be printed in black and white. Make sure that any color figures submitted will be interpretable in grayscale/black and white. See our figure guidelines for additional information.
Format tables using the Table Layout function in Microsoft Word rather than aligning columns in text with tabs and spaces or using text boxes.
Manuscripts must not be submitted to another journal while they are under review by IJSC, nor should they have been previously published. Manuscripts are typically read by multiple (e.g., three) reviewers, and the review process generally takes 10–12 weeks. Manuscripts will be evaluated in terms of topical relevance, theoretical and methodological adequacy, and clarity of explanation and analysis. Authors should be prepared to provide the data and research instrument(s) on which the manuscript is based for examination if requested by the editor. Comments from reviewers concerning manuscripts, along with the editorial decision, are made available to authors.
Questions about the journal or manuscript submission should be directed to the editor of the journal:
