Coaching and Coach Education in Brazil

In Brazil, contrary to the situation in many countries, sport coaching at all levels is considered a profession. Following a law passed by the government, those who want to coach are required to earn a university diploma called a ‘Bachelor in Physical Education’. This bachelor’s degree prepares future professionals to work in any of the following areas: health, leisure, and sport performance. Because universities have some fexibility regarding the courses that they offer and can also focus on one or any combination of the three aforementioned areas, we cannot assume that graduate students have acquired the same knowledge and developed the same competencies. Therefore, a broad inquiry of what is provided by different universities was needed to create a picture of the curriculum that future sport coaches will experience. In an effort to situate the Brazilian coaching and coach education system within a worldwide perspective, the data collected are interpreted using the International Sport Coaching Framework (ISCF).

Michel Milistetd is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education at the Midwest State University (UNICENTRO/ PR). He is a Phd candidate at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). He has experience in the areas of sport pedagogy, sport coaching and volleyball.

Pierre Trudel is a professor in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa in Canada. He has published over 100 articles, and has been a consultant for many sport organizations, developing programs and supervising coaches. He is the current co-chair of the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE)’s research committee.

Isabel Mesquita is an associate professor in the Faculty of Sports at the University of Porto (FADE-UP). She is the coordinator of the Master Program of Sport for Children and Young People. She is an international researcher with experience in the areas of sport coaching, sport performance analysis and teaching models of sports.

Juarez Vieira do Nascimento is an associate professor and associate dean of graduate studies in the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). He is the leader of the Sport Pedagogy Research Center at UFSC. He is productivity researcher of the National Council of Technological and Scientific Development in professional development and sport pedagogy areas.
