This paper highlights the status of coaching and coach education policy and practice on the island of Ireland. The island of Ireland represents a unique setting as it comprises a hybrid jurisdiction of (a) the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and (b) the Republic of Ireland. A historical and sociopolitical backdrop provides insight into how key agencies develop coaching and coach education policy and practice in a highly complex dual environment. A five-step meta-synthesis process of data collection and analysis revealed key policy and practice issues on the island relating to (a) the coaching workforce and (b) coach education system.

Fiona Chambers is a senior lecturer and the director of Sports Studies and Physical Education at University College Cork in Ireland. She is on the Board of Directors of the Association Internationale des Écoles Supérieures d’Éducation Physique and is the Link Convener of the Research in Sport Pedagogy network in the European Educational Research Association. She is a co-founder of All Island All Active, which spearheads an interdisciplinary approach to physical activity promotion on the island of Ireland.
Robin Gregg is a lecturer in School of Sport at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. He has extensive industry experience gained through various roles at both a policy and operational level in coaching and elite sports development. He is currently a member of the UK Coaching Standards Group.
