PES 2023 JIF: 1.4The official journal of the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine, Pediatric Exercise Science (PES) is devoted to enriching the scientific knowledge of exercise during childhood. Articles focus on children’s unique responses to exercise; the role of exercise in treating chronic pediatric disease; the importance of physical activity in preventing illness and preserving wellness; and methods for making youth sports safer and more enjoyable.

PES is published quarterly in February, May, August, and November with conference abstracts as supplemental issues.

Mission

Pediatric Exercise Science is a journal committed to enriching the scientific knowledge of exercise during childhood and adolescence. To this end it publishes information that contributes to an understanding of (a) the unique aspects of the physiologic, physical, biochemical, and psychologic responses of children to exercise, (b) the role of exercise in the treatment of pediatric chronic diseases, (c) the importance of physical activity in the prevention of illness and preservation of wellness, and (d) the means by which participation in sports may be made safer and more enjoyable for children and youth. Consideration will be given for publication of work by various methodologies consistent with the scientific approach.

Besides original research, the journal includes review articles, commentaries, brief reports, and editorial comments. Pediatric Exercise Science encourages the expression of conflicting opinions regarding children and exercise by providing a forum for alternative viewpoints. At the same time, it serves as a means of accumulating a base of research information that will allow application of experimental data to clinical practice. The scientific disciplines contributing to this body of knowledge are diverse. Therefore it is the purpose of this journal to provide a common focus for disseminating advances in the science of exercise during childhood. In doing so, the journal allows the opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas between disciplines that will potentiate the growth of knowledge in this field. Pediatric Exercise Science seeks to stimulate new ideas regarding exercise in children and to increase the awareness of scientists, health care providers, and physical educators of the importance of exercise during childhood.

Authorship Guidelines

The Journals Division at Human Kinetics adheres to the criteria for authorship as outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors*:

Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to:

a. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
b. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
c. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
d. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Conditions a, b, c, and d must all be met. Individuals who do not meet the above criteria may be listed in the acknowledgments section of the manuscript. *http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html

Authors who use artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies (such as Large Language Models [LLMs], chatbots, or image creators) in their work must indicate how they were used in the cover letter and the work itself. These technologies cannot be listed as authors as they are unable to meet all the conditions above, particularly agreeing to be accountable for all aspects of the work.

Open Access

Human Kinetics is pleased to allow our authors the option of having their articles published Open Access. In order for an article to be published Open Access, authors must complete and return the Request for Open Access form and provide payment for this option. To learn more and request Open Access, click here.

Manuscript Guidelines

All Human Kinetics journals require that authors follow our manuscript guidelines in regards to use of copyrighted material, human and animal rights, and conflicts of interest as specified in the following link: https://journals.humankinetics.com/page/author/authors

Pediatric Exercise Science welcomes submissions of original research, topical reviews, commentaries, and letters to the editor which address issues surrounding the science of exercise in subjects less than 18 years old. In general, Pediatric Exercise Science does not publish material related to physical education curricula or pedagogy, sports medicine (including athletic injuries), or motor development.

The instructions below are intended to help authors prepare high-quality and readable manuscripts. Authors are encouraged to refer to a recent issue of the journal to ascertain the preferred layout, format, style, and appearance.

Cover Letters

Authors must submit a separate cover letter that lists (a) the title of the manuscript, (b) the date of submission, and (c) the full names of all the authors and their institutional or corporate affiliations, as well as (d) the corresponding author's e-mail address. In addition to this essential information, a cover letter should include clear statements pertaining to potential fragmented publication, authorship, and other ethical considerations.

More specifically, the cover letter should include the following statements:

  • "This manuscript represents results of original work that have not been published elsewhere (except as an abstract in conference proceedings). This manuscript has not and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere until a decision is made regarding its acceptability for publication in PES. If accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere."
  • "If there are any perceived financial conflicts of interest related to the research reported in the manuscript, I/we (the author/s) have disclosed it in the Author's Notes."
  • "All authors acknowledge ethical responsibility for the content of the manuscript and will accept the consequences of any ethical violation."

Format

The manuscript should be double-spaced, including the abstract, references, and any block quotations. Line numbers should be inserted, continuous throughout the text, to facilitate the review process. Manuscripts are subject to editing to eliminate sexist and biased language. Please note that an anonymous review process is used to evaluate manuscripts. As such, any clues to the author’s identity should be eliminated from the manuscript. The first page of the manuscript must not include author names or affiliations, but it should include the title of the paper and a preferred running head.

It is expected that the length of the body of the manuscript, including title page, abstract, text, and references, will be 15 to 20 double-spaced pages. Number the pages in the upper right corner beginning with the title page. All manuscripts must include an abstract limited to 200 words. A structured abstract format should be used that includes labeling the following sections within the abstract paragraph: Purpose, Method, Results, and Conclusion. A statement regarding institutional review board approval as well as obtaining informed consent/assent from parents/child subjects should be included in the Methods section.

Style

All manuscripts must be written in English, with attention to concise language, a logical structure and flow of information, and correct grammar. We appreciate that some of our authors, for whom English is not their first language, may need assistance to reach the standards required by the journal. In addition, some authors may not be sufficiently experienced in scientific writing styles. Since manuscripts that fail to meet the journal’s writing standards will not be sent out for review, such authors may wish to seek assistance from native English speakers and/or experienced colleagues prior to submitting their paper. Many journals acknowledge the existence of companies that offer professional editing services. An example of such a service can be found at http://www.aje.com/. This information does not constitute endorsement of this service. Use of an editorial service is at the discretion and cost of the authors, and will not guarantee acceptance for publication in Pediatric Exercise Science.

Avoid using unnecessary jargon and abbreviations, but use an acronym or abbreviation if it is more commonly recognized than the spelled-out version of a term. Formats of numbers, units, and other statistics should follow the AMA Manual of Style, 10th edition. Measurements of length, height, mass, and volume should be reported in metric units (meter, kilogram). Only standard physiological abbreviations should be used. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full wording should precede the first use of an abbreviation.

Key Points

Authors should provide 2–3 key points that describe the novel results or highlights of their research as a separate document. The key points are intended for a general audience, no more than 30 words, and in sentence format.

Figures and Tables

Figures and tables should be limited to a combined total of 5 and should not duplicate material in the text. Figure legends and tables should be included in the main document with the full text. Tables must be formatted by Word and must be editable. Please do not submit tables as images or PDFs. Figures should be submitted separately in TIF or JPG format. Figures should be professional in appearance and have clean, crisp lines. Hand drawings and hand lettering are not acceptable. Submit one copy of each figure. Identify each figure clearly. Tables should be double-spaced and include brief titles. However, authors are encouraged to submit illustrations rather than tables. When tabular material is necessary, the information should not duplicate the text.

Supplementary Materials

PES is able to publish supplementary material online alongside the journal article. Supplementary material must be referred to in the main document and uploaded as a separate file to be included in the peer-review process. However, supplementary material is not included in the copy-editing process and so the author retains responsibility for the content and presentation of the material.

References

The reference style for Pediatric Exercise Science should follow the Vancouver style guidelines set by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, as they appear in the committee’s Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. In the reference list, the citations should be listed in alphabetical order (rather than in the order of citation). In the text, references are identified by Arabic numerals in parentheses (1). Assure that all entries in the reference list are cited in the text and that all those in the text are included in the reference list. References should be limited to previously published works or those which are in press (accepted for publication). Usually the number of references should not exceed 50. An abstract properly identified may be cited only when it is the sole source. The reference list should be double-spaced. When the number of authors of a reference exceed 7, use the first 3 followed by “et al.”. Examples of reference style include:

Journal Article: Soldin OP, Mattison DR. Sex differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Clin Pharmacokinet. 2009;48(3):143–157.

Book: Heyward VH, Stolarczyk LM. Applied Body Composition Assessment. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics; 1996.

Chapter in an Edited Book: Young LR, Altose MD. Respiratory responses to ventilatory loading. In: Hornbein TF, editor. Regulation of Breathing. New York: Dekker; 1981, pp. 905–964.

Authors are encouraged to consult the U.S. National Library of Medicine for more detailed examples.

Submit a Manuscript

Authors must submit their manuscripts through ScholarOne (see submission button at the top of this page), the online submission system for PES. ScholarOne manages the electronic transfer of manuscripts throughout the manuscript review process while providing step-by-step instructions and a user-friendly design. Upon submission, the corresponding author is required to nominate three potential reviewers for the manuscript with suitable expertise in the area addressed by the manuscript. The journal is under no obligation to use any of the nominated reviewers.

Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication will be required to transfer copyright to Human Kinetics, Inc. Please visit ScholarOne to review the copyright form located under the "Instructions & Forms" link in the upper right corner. You do not need an account to access this information. Also, any problems that may be encountered can be resolved easily by selecting “Help” in the upper right corner.
