In Tribute: Daryl Siedentop

(1938–2021)

By now, many of you are aware that Daryl Siedentop passed away on July 15, 2021. For a large majority of those in our field, Daryl’s name has been part and parcel with our preparation to become and work as physical education teacher educators (PETEs) and scholars. There is, however, a new group of PETEs who might not be as familiar with Daryl’s work and the impact he had on the profession.

During his career, Daryl influenced countless numbers of teachers, teacher educators, and scholars. The very existence of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education (JTPE) is due to two of his doctoral students and his own contributions to the journal, as you canDaryl pensively sitting on bench in the park see, are not only plentiful but span three decades. Perhaps even more remarkable is that his first publication in a Human Kinetics journal was in 1971 and his last in 2009.

As the current Editor-in-Chief of JTPE, I am proud to announce that Human Kinetics has decided to ensure that all of Daryl’s work that appeared in JTPE or in any Human Kinetics title will be accessible via this webpage. For those former students, colleagues, and friends who knew Daryl, we hope you enjoy this tribute. For those just starting your preparation as a physical education teacher, PETE, or researcher, we hope this unfettered access to Daryl’s work provides you with an understanding of how important he was to what we do.
