Reflect In and Speak Out: An Autoethnographic Study on Race and the Embedded Sport Psychology Practitioner

This paper aims to present a critical experience of race for the embedded sport psychology practitioner from a non-WEIRD, migratory, Black, Asian, and minority ethnic doctoral student and trainee sport psychologist in the United Kingdom. In particular, I move from intrapersonal reflection to an interpersonal cultural analysis that (re)considers some assumptions in existing training and applied sport psychology practice. In the consequential ripples to these reflections, I evaluate and argue to modify (a) ideology of the culturally isolated practitioner, (b) self-recognition of unconscious bias and discrimination, and (c) routes to incorporate antidiscriminatory practice training in sport psychology education pathways. Using a rigorous autoethnographic approach on this novel area reveals several implications for applied practice and the development of professional philosophy. Using conversation vignettes, personal lived experience accounts on the impact of race on education and development as a practitioner are discussed in this original work. The goal is to make the invisible visible by exploring vulnerabilities in practice, client engagement, and educational training in an equal and nondiscriminatory manner.

Person-Centered Sport Psychology Practice: A Framework for Working With Emotions and Complex Processes

Person-centered therapy (PCT) is a client-centered therapeutic approach that focuses on the practitioner–client relationship and has been shown to be an effective practice approach when working with clients presenting complex emotional experiences. We provide a brief outline of PCT theory and specific practice techniques for working with emotions in applied sport psychology practice. By adopting a case-report methodology, we outline self-charting and clearing a space, which can be applied when working with complex emotions in the sport context. This case report contributes to the literature as the first study to provide a framework for PCT application in applied sport psychology. By providing a “how-to-apply” framework, we aim to show how to apply these techniques in practice using “in vivo” session transcripts. Evaluations of interventions and reflections are demonstrated, which will provide practitioners with a case example and recommendations for context-sensitive application of PCT.

Same Game, Many Cultures: A Multicultural Reflection on a Trainee’s Intervention Work With a Professional Esports Team

This applied case study aims to explore the experience and multicultural reflections of a trainee sport and exercise psychologist working with a professional, multicultural esports team. We showcase the context of the case with a League of Legends team, consisting of five players, along with the intervention conducted. The case is supplemented by critical reflections on practice in a multicultural context from learning logs and applied practice notes with the T-R-E-E-S model for multicultural practice in sport psychology. This study delves into several critical aspects, namely: (a) recognizing multicultural elements, (b) customizing interventions to the dynamic esports environment, (c) scrutinizing how language and culture impact team cohesion, and (d) considering individual boundaries in personal-disclosure interventions. Finally, as one of the first case studies to reflect on multicultural practice in esports, we provide key recommendations and implications to promote multicultural work in research and applied practice in esports.

Efficacy of a Video Modeling and Imagery-Controlled Trial Intervention in a Non-Western Adolescent Population: A Case Study

There is a dearth of evidence from non-Western populations and contexts in the sport psychology literature. With increasing attention given to the development of cultural sport psychology and decentralizing sport psychology evidence, this is the first study to document the effectiveness of applied interventions in non-Western populations (herein, India). With a rigorous methodological design, we randomly distributed a sample of 90 adolescents into three skill groups (discrete, serial, and continuous) and separated them across the team and individual sports. A random assignment of participants to two experimental groups, that is, imagery and video modeling interventions, and a control group was conducted for the duration of a 66-day intervention. Sport psychology imagery and video modeling interventions were provided in addition to skills training across all groups. Repeated-measures analyses of variance demonstrated that the intervention groups exhibited positive outcomes on skill execution (across discrete, serial, and continuous skills) and anxiety compared with the control group (p < .05). The findings of this study provide novel evidence that video modeling and imagery interventions are effective among a non-Western adolescent population. The context of this high-impact intervention case study, the intervention, and the challenges of developing and delivering the intervention are discussed along with their practical significance for future research and applied practice.
